Vegan krupuk, prawn chips, prawn crackers, prawn crisps, shrimp chips, shrimp crackers, however you might call them at home, this a very quick and easy recipe to make the delicious snack at home. And 100% plant based! Ready in under 5 minutes and fully vegan!

The other day, while deep-frying glass noodles, I thought that krupuk is quite similar, just made from slightly thick rice paper slices. Of course, I had to try that out immediately! And it worked perfectly!
Seasoned with nori and salt, my vegan crab chips get the perfect ocean taste.
So easy that I can hardly call it a recipe!

And now have fun popping up rice paper into shrimp chips. And enjoy the crunch!

This recipe is also available as a video on my YouTube channel. Please follow me there!

Here are some pics of my vegan prawn crackers:

Ingredients for 1 large serving of krupuk:

10 pieces, approx. 5 cm in size, thick rice paper (You can find it as “Rice flakes” in Asian markets)
300 ml of vegetable oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil or coconut oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon nori algae powder (or very fine flakes, are available in the Asian market. You can also shred a nori sheet for sushi in the food processor.)

Preparation:

Heat the oil in a small saucepan or in a very small pan.
Briefly add 2 to 3 pieces of rice flakes. Fry until they have puffed up and became airy and crispy.

Take out the krupuk with a slotted spoon and place it on kitchen paper to drain. Maybe also use some kitchen paper to pad off some leftover oil.
Repeat this with the other pieces of rice flakes.

Sprinkle the salt and the nori flakes on the fresh and still warm, vegan shrimp chips.

That’s it! Easy, right?

Enjoy your snack!

Tip:

Of course, you can also season the krupuk completely differently to suit your taste. For example, they also taste delicious with chili powder, ground, dried ginger, various spice mixtures or lemongrass.
